The History of the FILBY FAMILY begins as we see it, at the village of FILBY, in Norfolk.

The village was there as far back in time as 1042 when Edward the Confessor ruled England

File the Dane. Possibly the way the village of Filby got its name; "FILE" his name and "BY" meaning place of.

 

1202

Succeeding Nicholas de Filby was Richard de Filby,

 

1260

Adam de Filby was King's clerk, and in 1278 he was Canon of St Martin's le Grand, London, but died in debt in 1287.

 

1273

There is a reference to a Roger de Filby.

 

1280

Sir Ralph de Filby was lord of the manor of Filby together with his wife Isabel.

 

1290

Adam de Filby was at Langley Abbey and at Caistor church in 1300.

 

1304

Nicholas de Filby was priest at Roydon.

 

1315

Robert de Filby Lord of East Hall, instituted John de Wykelwode Rector of the church of Filby.

 

1319

Robert de Filby was "presented' by Lady Joan de Clavering to the church at Burgh.

 

1321

Nicholas de Filby was appointed to the church at Hollesby

 

1325

Richard de Filby was Rector at Stokesby

 

1330

Walter de Filby was Lord of St Peters Mundon....

 

1342

Walter de Filby was indicted with Richard le Marshal 'and other robbers' at Royston. (possibly another person).

 

1345

Walter de Filby of Yarmouth and John de Filby settle a Manor on Robert Clere and his wife Alice Filby, daughter of Sir John Filby.

 

1349

Walter de Filby presented Walter Fraceys to the church at Burgh

 

1370

Ralph de Filby was master of St Paul's Hospital, Norwich. And was still there in 1389.

 

1399

Back at Filby village William Frysby was rector of the church.

 

1434

Sir Hugh Halsham held the Manor of Filby

 

1463

Sir Jeffrey Boleyn purchased land in Filby. His granddaughter Alice Boleyn married Robert Clere who was the great grandson of Alice Filby (see 1345); this Robert Clere was uncle by marriage to Anne Boleyn, Queen of England.

 

1473

Reference to the will of Peter Fylby of Wylby.

 

1480

Reference to the will of John Filby, North Walsham.

 

1542

Mary Boleyn, sister of Anne, confirm the Manor of Filby to Sir James Boleyn

 

1544

Church record for baptism of Joan Filbye, daughter of Thomas Filbye of Wilby, Suffolk.

Also "On October 22nd a Nicholas ffylbye took unto himself Elizabeth Gobbert as a bride and sired four sons - Nicholas on May 1st 1546; William on February 2nd 1548; Thomas on August 21st 1550 and Stephen on November 18th 1552." such may have been the beginnings of many Filby's.

 

1554

Sir William Paston died  'seised of'  Filby. (seised of = possessing legally)

 

1560

Death of Nicholas Filby of Hoxne from whom several of the present Filbys are descended (see 1544).

 

1582

William Filbie, aged 27, died at Tyburn as a martyr for refusing to change his religion. From this time on many more Filby records appeared in Parishes around the country.
